Many men with Grade 6 baldness believe a hair transplant cannot help them. This patient at Dheeran Skin and Hair Transplantation Clinic, Coimbatore, proved otherwise. Six months after his procedure, his front and crown show dense, natural-looking hair growth.
What Is Grade 6 Baldness?
Doctors grade male pattern baldness on the Norwood scale, from Grade 1 to Grade 7. At Grade 6, the bald area at the front joins the bald crown. Only a band of hair remains on the sides and back of the head.
This stage is considered advanced. It needs careful planning because the bald area is large and donor hair is limited.
Can Grade 6 Baldness Be Treated with a Hair Transplant?
Yes, in many cases. The answer depends on three things:
- Donor area strength — how dense and healthy the hair at the back and sides is
- Hair characteristics — thickness, curl and colour of your hair
- Overall health and age — stable hair loss and good healing give better results
In advanced cases, beard or body hair can sometimes be used as an extra donor source. A detailed scalp analysis at consultation tells you what is possible for you.
The Patient's Before Condition
The patient came to us with Grade 6 baldness. His frontal hairline, mid-scalp and crown were almost completely bare. Like many men at this stage, he was unsure whether a transplant would give a natural look.
The Procedure
Dr. Vivinprasadh M.D (D.V.L), our hair transplant surgeon, planned the treatment around his donor capacity. The plan focused on three goals:
- A natural hairline designed to suit his face shape and age
- Maximum coverage of the front and mid-scalp, where hair matters most for appearance
- High graft survival using careful extraction and implantation
At Dheeran, we use the non-root-touch FUE technique. Grafts are handled without touching the roots, which protects them during the procedure.
The Result After 6 Months
Six months after surgery, the change is clear. The new hairline looks natural and the bald scalp is now covered with growing hair. As the patient himself shared, the results look natural — no one can tell it is a transplant.
Growth usually keeps improving up to 12 months, so his hair is expected to thicken further.
Hair Transplant Growth Timeline
| Time after surgery | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Day 1–10 | Scabs form and fall off; mild redness |
| Week 2–8 | Transplanted hair sheds (shock loss) — this is normal |
| Month 3–4 | New hair starts to grow, often thin at first |
| Month 6 | Visible coverage and density, as seen in this case |
| Month 9–12 | Hair thickens and matures to final result |

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a hair transplant possible for Grade 6 baldness?
Yes, for most patients with a healthy donor area. A scalp analysis confirms how many grafts are available.
How long does it take to see results?
New hair starts at 3–4 months. Good coverage shows by 6 months, and the final result comes at 12 months.
Will the result look natural?
Yes. A well-designed hairline and correct graft angles make the result look natural, as in this patient's case.
Is the transplanted hair permanent?
Transplanted hair comes from the donor area, which resists balding. It usually lasts for life.
Can I combine treatment with medicines?
Yes. Medical treatment can help protect your existing hair. Your doctor will advise what suits you.
